About Joosep Anson

Joosep had a tough time finding jobs in Estonia so after trying his luck in Riga in 1906 and in Pärnu in 1907, and spending time in the army, he decided to go to sea and managed to get on a tanker to America without a passport. He made his way to Canada where his two brothers were. There also jobs were few but he made do by working in mining, forestry, and construction. He wasn't too happy with the management in some. Thus, he became involved in some strikes. At a goldmining job he guarded the door so that strike breakers could not enter. Needless to say, he lost that job. His brothers had been reading "Uus Ilm" a labour publication since 1911. He also became interested in the movement and he corresponded with Hans Põõgelmann, (the man who established the Communist Party in Estonia). World War I took place during this period.

In 1922 he joined the Canadian Labour Party His job was to distribute literature. Uus Ilm was focusing on establishing agricultural communes.

In 1923 a group of 38 left Canada (including some from the US) along with some poor quality machinery sold to them by American businessmen. ) and arrived in Russia to esablish a commune called Koit near Rostov by the Don River.

After the war Joosep was sent to Estonia as a forestry specialist, later living in the Valjala kolhoos. (Joori). He later was moved to an old-folks home in Tallinn, where he passed away and was buried.
