José de Leyva, like his father, was also away from home at the time of the Pueblo Revolt. In 1681, he signed up as a Captain, thirty-two years of age, and the son of the Maese de Campo, Pedro de Leyva, both widers.

He was described as a native of New Mexico, of good stature, having a long face, thick hair and a beard. He served as a Tigua interpreter during the Otermín Campaign, a linguistic gift most likely aquired in the Tigua pueblos of the Manzono Range.

José's wife, Juana Fresqui, had been killed by the Indians in the Revolt. He remarried in 1682, at the Real de San Pedro de Alcantara. His second wife was Estefania Márquez Domínguez.

When Juana Fresqui had been killed, his two daughter were likely taken captive by Tanos of Galisteo. They two were found in 1692, when Juan Olguín claimed them as relatives.
