About Josefa Lara Tiongson

Josefa Lara Tiongson-Mateo, also known as "Pepitang Baliwag" and "Pepitang Himala". The kundiman, "Jocelynang Baliwag", was a song written by Isabelo delos Reyes as a way of courting her. Along with the song, delos Reyes also wrote the novel "El Anillo de la Dalaga de Marmol" dedicated to Josefa. Isabelo delos Reyes pursued Josefa Tiongson in 1905. She was 17 years old on the photo that was published on the music sheet and the cover of the novel.

In 1941, Antonio J. Molina introduced the song "Jocelynang Baliwag" to the academe. Molina thought that the song was the kundiman of the revolution because of the "Musica del legitimo kundiman de procedente del campo insurrecto". The melody of Jocelynang Baliwag was definitely older than the song itself.

Josefa Tiongson-Mateo had no idea she was in Philippine history books discussing the music of the Philippine revolution.
