About Joseph Bryant Agnew
Per "Shakers of Ohio". p. 245, re the Whitewater Shaker Community, both Joseph and his brother Brant Agnew were leaders of the Whitewater community.
Reports from the year 1835 read as follows:
"....we first have a list of members, and also the
information that a new covenant had been signed. The
list of inhabitants, with ages; includes:
The Center Family - Age The South Family - Age
- William Agnew 20 Joseph Agnew 49
- Samuel Agnew 15 James A. Agnew 32
- Theodore Agnew 9 William Agnew 15
- Phoebe Agnew 18 Amanda Agnew 12
- Peggy Boggett 70 Marietta Agnew 18
(Note: "Peggy Boggett" is Margaret (Brant) Agnew Boggett. After the death of William Agnew , she married Joseph Boggett.)
P. 214 of "The Greening of West Branch" contains the following passage: "Shaker societies were divided into two or more "families" of about thirty members each. They all lived in one large house but with separate entrances and bedrooms for each sex. Whitewater village was divided into three "families" including the Center Family where Joseph and Peggy Boggett lived, and the South Family headed by Joseph Agnew... Joseph was elder in the South Family...Brant was named village trustee in 1831..."
Apparently Miriam McKEE and Joseph AGNEW divorced before Joseph joined the Shaker Community, because her name is not listed as a member. Also she had a second spouse named Sylvester SALTMARSH. She died in Decatur Co., IN one year before Joseph died in Ohio.
The CASTENS' data states that Miriam (McKee) AGNEW was the founder of the Whitewater Shaker Village. This seems strange since her name did not appear on the photocopies sent to compiler by Michelle TAUNTON.
He resided at on 15 Feb 1859 in Whitewater Shaker Village, Butler Co., OH.
Compiler's note: (08 Sept. 2000)
It is said that a plaque had been placed outside the house of Joseph B. Agnew in Nauvoo, IL, which indicated Joseph Brant Agnew had been thought to be the arsonist who set fire to the Mormon Temple in Nauvoo. An e-mail letter on 08 September 2000 from Marj Agnew-Edlen, a sister to Mary Agnew-Wilkerson, both descendants of William Agnew and Margaret Brant, was sent to compiler. In her letter, Ms. Agnew-Edlin, expressed strong objections to this statement, explaining that she has researched this claim thoroughly, and that the "Joseph B. Agnew" mentioned on the "plaque" (which Ms. Edlen described as "a huge sign hanging on a pole that has since been removed...") was Joseph Boggett Agnew, the second son of Brant Agnew, and not Joseph Brant Agnew, son of William Agnew and Margaret Brant. Notations have been made to the biographical remarks of both Joseph Brant Agnew and Joseph Boggett Agnew to this effect.
