Joseph Arnold, a dry goods and clothing merchant who immigrated from Jebenhausen, Germany, with his wife and seven children in 1849, was a well respected citizen of Hagerstown. When he died, a local newspaper, the Herald of Freedom and Torch Light, made a point of eulogizing him as "an esteemed Israelite".
