Joseph Arnold was the first member of this family which we have been able to positively identify.

Author & researcher, Samuel A. Bates, believed that he was the son of that John Arnold who had a grant of land Feb. 24, 1640, from the town of Boston, because he named his second son John; but we have found that John died before May 28, 1662, when administration on his estate was granted to his brother Samuel Arnold of Marshfield. This lot was sold by Samuel Arnold to John Hull, Dec. 6, 1670. While this proves nothing, it seems to indicate no connection between the parties.

Joseph resided in the east part of the town (Braintree, Norfolk Co., MA), on what is now Quincy avenue, as is clearly indicated by deeds. He was alive Nov. 25, 1696, when he deeded his home property to his youngest son, Ephraim, and describes it as bounded south and west on land of Thomas Holbrook; north on William Copeland; east on the sea or salt water, and specifies sixty acres.

He married Rebecca Curtis, 8 (4) 1648 [08 June 1648, Braintree, Norfolk Co., Massachusetts]. She was probably widow of Deodate Curtis, although it has been thought that she was the daughter of that person. A careful examination of the records will show the reason for this supposition. She died Aug. 14, 1693.

Their children were: 1-William [Arnold], born 16 (1) 1649, probably died young. 2-John [Arnold], (2), born 1650, probably died young. 3-Joseph [Arnold], born 1652, probably died young. 4-John [Arnold], April 29, 1655 (see further). 5-Samuel [Arnold], Aug. 7, 1658 (died Jan. 27, 1680, ?). 6-Ephraim [Arnold], June 11, 1664 (see further). /Note: Husband of contributor, GJOT, descends from this lineage.
