Biography

Joseph Ashley, Jr. was the son of Joseph Ashley and Elizabeth (Percival) Ashley.[1] No birth record for Joseph has been found to definitively establish his date of birth. "Ashley of the Old Colony" states that he was born before June 24, 1720, because he witnessed a deed on June 24, 1741, based on the mistaken assumption that he would have to have been 21 to witness a deed.[1] However, the age of majority to witness a deed was only 14,[2] so the 1741 deed only establishes that he must have been born before June 24, 1727. The best guide off which to estimate Joseph's date of birth is probably his wife's date of birth. Based on his wife's date of birth (May 1723 or possible August 1722), a reasonable guess for Joseph's date of birth is 1721.

The marriage intentions of Joseph and Elizabeth Swift of Plymouth were published in Rochester on March 3, 1748.[3][4] "Ashleys of the Old Colony" says that they were married on March 4, 1748/9.[1] However, a one-day gap between publication of intentions and marriage seems unusually short (or a one-year gap unusually long, if one interprets the date of publication of intentions as March 3, 1747/8). Since there were two Elizabeth Swifts born in Plymouth in 1720-1730, there is some uncertainty as to which one he married. One was Elizabeth Swift, daughter of Thomas and Thankful Swift, born May 23, 1723,[5] and the other was Elizabeth Swift, daughter of Ebenezer and Mary Swift, born August 22, 1722.[6] It seems more likely that Joseph's wife was the former rather than the latter based on (i) the fact that Joseph and his wife named one of their children Thankful but did not name any Ebenezer or Mary and (ii) the fact that the Elizabeth Swift who was the daughter of Ebenezer and Mary is claimed as the wife of Gershom Morse and Thomas Toby.

Joseph and Elizabeth had the following children, all born in Rochester:

November 3, 1835[10] Joseph, b. January 3, 1762,[7][10] d. before October 1, 1781 (date estate was inventoried)[10] Joseph probably died in early 1778, as his estate was inventoried on June 21 of that year.[1]
