About Joseph Babel

Joseph Babel, 107 Fourth St. NE, Mandan, North Dakota died Friday at a Bismarck hospital. He was 87.

He was born in Odessa, Russia, on February 15, 1886, to Phillip and Elizabeth (Ehli) Babel.

He came to the United States with his parents in 1894, and settled on a farm near St. Anthony, North Dakota. On November 4, 1907, he married Pauline Hopfauf in St Anthony, North Dakota. The couple homesteaded on farm south of St Anthony near Junction Inn.

Joseph helped build the church at St. Anthony and served on the board. He also drew up plans for many buildings and silos constructed in the area. Joseph and Pauline helped many people with home remedies when a doctor was not available. They both were active in the church as were many of their family members.

Mrs Babel died October 28, 1949, and her husband retired and moved into Mandan, North Dakota in 1959.

Joseph retired from the farm at age 71 and lived in Mandan until his death. Joseph and Pauline had 15 children. Martin their youngest son took over the farm in 1950 and farmed until his death in 1966. (auto accident)

He leaves four sons,

  1. Phillip, Pinhurst, Idaho;
  2. Fabian, Kenosha, Wisconsin;
  3. Sebastian, Leith, North Dakota;
  4. and Edward, Bloomington, Minnesota; eight daughters,
  5. Mrs. Ralph (Perpetua) Lewis,
