About Joseph Baldwin, II

JOSEPH2, Joseph1

SEE NOTES BELOW

Joseph Baldwin, born in Milford, Conn. about 1640 to Joseph Baldwin and Hannah Whitlock. He was bapt. June 23,1644. In 1666, he was freeman in Hadley, where he settled with his father. They not unlikely lived together, as the father conveyed to the son one-half in common of the homestead.. He married SARAH COLEY, of Milford.

Joseph's children were:

  1. Joseph, b Oct 1,1663,
  2. James b c1666,
  3. Mehitable,b June 1670; d July 11,1670,
  4. Hannah, b Apr 13,1678,
  5. Mary, b Nov 10,1674; d.Dec 17 following,
  6. Mercy, or Mary, m Samuel Allen Jr., N Northhampton; b Jan 3,1666, and s of Nehemiah,
  7. Hannah, b March 9,1675; d Oct 31,1676,
  8. Samuel, b April 7,1679 and
  9. Hannah, b April 27,1681. (CC Baldwin note....I think she may have been the one admitted to full communion in Milford Church, Feb 18,1702, where her brother James then lived).

In January, 1677, one of the daughters of Joseph was admonished at Court for wearing silk contrary to law. This was under an old sumptuary law of Massachusetts, passed in 1651, forbidding the use of silk to persons whose estates were not worth $200. Six females were tried at this Court for the offense; two of them "for wearing it in a flaunting manner and excess of apparel, to the offence of sober people." There seems to have been, about this time, a zeal that far outran the law, as several of the estates, in this instance, were over the limit, and one was over $1000.

'NOTE: Regarding Boltwood's "History of Hadley" and claims of an Elizabeth as an other wife, the order of children attributed to that wife do not coincide with the dates of birth of the children who are verified. In order for that record to be valid, the Elizabeth woud have had to leave, come back, leave, come back etc. and be in between the marriage to Sarah and Joseph.

'ATTENTION: ELIZABETH BOTSFORD was NOT wife of this Joseph but wife of Joseph, son of John "The Immigrant" Baldwin and Mary Camp.
