Joseph and his wife Elizabeth died on the same day on October 15, 1724, probably as the result of a fire sweeping through their house according to researchers. They left six children under the age of ten.

Children of Elizabeth Sanger and Joseph Bartholomew were all born in Woodstock, Windham, CT: Samuel Bartholomew born November 1714; Joseph (II) Bartholomew born February 1716; Jedediah Bartholomew born October 1717; Mary Bartholomew born February 1719 (or October 1718); John Bartholomew born March 1720; and Benjamin Bartholomew born June 1723.
