   Narrative||
   A Joseph Bartlett from Balltown served in the American Revolution (Balltown-West, p. 69).
   Joseph Bartlett moved from Balltown to Montville, Maine (ibid, p. 16).
   Indeed, Joseph Bartlett served with the Massachusetts line and applied for a pension 25 April 1818, then a resident of Lincoln City, Maine (Abstracts of Revolutionary War Pension Files, p. 175).
   In 1820, he was a resident of Montville, Maine, age 61, with wife Nancy, age 56 and children: Levi, 19; Sally, 16; Nancy, 20; Daniel, 14; and Mary, 10 (ibid).
   On 8 April 1827, at Montville, Waldo county, Maine, he married Hannah Philbrick. The widow Hannah applied for a pension 27 June 1853 at Kennebec county, Maine, age 79 (ibid).
   Joseph Bartlett died at Montville in 1828. Montville was in Lincoln County, Maine until 1827 when Waldo County was formed. No record can be found of any will of Joseph that was administered, in Lincoln or Waldo County records. However, a probate record exists, as noted in the next paragraph.
   In 1830, the estate of Joseph Bartlett was probated. The estate was insufficient to pay the creditors. The entire record was searched by this compilier for clues to any children. Two showed up as creditors, David Bartlett receiving $7.00 and Levi Bartlett receiving $4.00 (FamilySearch.org, Maine County Records, Waldo County Probate Record Volume 1, pp. 384, 385, 506-508).

   Census analysis||
   Prior to 1850, the U.S. Census schedules named only the head of house. Then all members of the household were listed only by gender and age groupings (names in parentheses are the compiler's best guess). Household members could include other than immediate family members, such as servants, hired hands, relatives, etc.
   1790 U.S. Census, Maine, Lincoln county, Balltown; Joseph Bartlett; one male over 15 (Joseph); four males under 16 (four unknown sons); three females of any age (Joseph's first spouse Rhoda and two unknown daughters).
   1800 U.S. Census, same location; Joseph Bartlett; four males 0-9 (sons James, Jonathan, David and Silas); two males 10-15 (two unknowns, probably sons from first marriage); one male 26-44 (Joseph); two females 0-9 (daughters Rhoda and Nancy); one female 10-15 (unknown, probably daughter from first marriage); one female 26-44 (Joseph's second spouse Nancy).
