Joseph Belnap passes away: Former Ogdenite, later of Preston, to be buried here

Joseph Belnap, former Ogden resident, died at Preston, Idaho, Saturday morning at 9 o'clock.

He was the son of Gilbert and Adeline Knight Belnap. He was born Jan. 26, 1853, in Ogden. During the early part of his life the family lived on the land now owned by the railroad on 24th Street, west of Wall Avenue. his parents moved to Hooper in 1869 where he grew to manhood and married Minerva P. Howard Apr. 26, 1875. When G. R. Beinan was elected sheriff of Weber County, he moved to Ogden and acted as deputy sheriff. he was deputy under the following succeeding sheriffs: Heber Wright, Charles Layne, and Joseph Bailey. he was with the posse who was attempting to capture the Major boys at the time Capt. Brown was killed near the Utah Hot Springs.

He resigned from the sheriff's force June 25, 1905, and moved his family in Preston, Idaho, where he engaged in the retail lumber business. Mr. Belnap was an active worker in the LDS church all his life. he filled a mission to the southern states from 1882 to 1884 and was a high councilman at the time of his death.

Besides his wife, he was survived by the following children:

  • Amos Belnap,
  • Emory Belnap
  • Mrs. Allen Cutler
  • Mrs. Ida Tippets, and
  • R. Stanton Belnap, of Preston, Idaho,
  • and 51 grandchildren and two great grandchildren.

The following brothers and sisters also survive:

  • Ruben Belnap
  • W. J. Belnap
  • Mrs. L. R. Hammond
  • Oliver Belnap
  • Frank W. Belnap
  • Hyrum Belnap
  • A. W. Belnap
  • Mrs. John Stoddard
  • Amos Belnap
  • Mrs. John Lowe, and
  • Mrs. Joseph Lowe.

Funeral services will be held at the Preston Fourth Ward Tuesday, Apr 3, at 2 p.m. The body will then be brought to Ogden and taken in charge by C. J. A. Lindquist. The body will be taken to Mr. Belnap's old home at 1948 Pingree Avenue, now occupied by his daughter, Mrs. Hyrum Williams. Services will be held at the 11th Ward chapel Thursday, April 6, at 2 p.m. Friends may call at the home Wednesday afternoon and Thursday at the time of the services.

Funeral to be held Thursday: Joseph Belnap

Funeral services will be held Thursday at 2 o'clock in the 11th Ward meeting house for Joseph Belnap, former Ogden man, who died at Preston, Idaho. The body may be viewed at the home of a daughter, Mrs. Harry Williams, 2948 Pingree Avenue, Wednesday and Thursday, until the funeral. Services were held at Preston today and the body, will be brought to Ogden by Lindquists, the undertakers.

From the Ogden Standard-Examiner of Friday, Apr. 7, 1922:

Funeral services for Joseph Belnap were held at 2 o'clock Thursday at the 11th Ward meeting house, Bishop N. A. Tanner officiated. William H. Manning sang "I Know My Redeemer Liveth," Mrs. Bernice Tyree sang "A Green Hill Far Away," Mrs. Ruby Anderson, "One Sweetly Solemn Thought," W. S. Wright, "Thy Will Be Done," Mrs. Bernice Erickson, "A Perfect Day." The speakers were Bishop D. H. Ensign, Amos Cook, President S. G. Dye, and Bishop Tanner. Interment was in the City Cemetery with Hyram Belnap dedicating the grave.
