Joseph Bessey was born in probably either Amenia in Dutchess County or in Kingsbury, Washington County, New York.
He was the son of Philip Bessey and Sarah Dunham who came to the Fabius area (28 miles from Marcellus) from Kingsbury about 1805 with their four sons and their families. Joseph came to Marcellus almost immediately thereafter as he is listed in the 1810 census for the town and is known to have had by unknown wife, three sons and one daughter.
a) Burr Bessey born about 1810 in Marcellus. He was married to Julia by the 1850 village census and had a son, Henry born in 1835 and a son, James Bessey born in 1845. A daughter, Julia was born in 1854. Burr was listed as a teamster , born in New York and with real estate listed as worth $500.The family is living next door to Burr's brother, Joseph, Jr. Wife Julia must have died between 1854-1860. For, in the 1860 census, he is living in Hannibal, Oswego County, new York with wife, Eliza.They are also there in the 1870 census.
