About Joseph Carle, Sr.
Includes NotesNotes for Joseph Carle: Joseph Carle's land adjoined land of John Carle which was taken for town use in percentage for other land which was granted at Hempstead town meeting October 20, 1707. Joseph Care's land also adjoined one hundred acres laid out to John Carle at Hempstead, April 3, 1711.
Joseph Carle was chosen one of the two fence-viewers and surveyors of highways of the town of Hempstead, April 7, 1713, and again April 4, 1714. October 14, 1723, he was a signer of a petition regarding division of undivided land in Hempstead. His name is found only once in the records of St. George's Church, at Hempstead, as follows: "Sarah, daughter of Joseph and ....Carle, baptized July 27, 1729." Presumably Sarah was then an adult and the mother deceased, hence her name was unknown to the person making the record. Joseph Carle purchased, at some time before June 5, 1732, from Barent Van Wyck, land in Hempstead adjoining land which said Van Wyck sold on said date to Robert Marvin. No other record of the first Joseph Carle., of Hempstead, is found except as contained in his will.
