About Joseph Nathaniel Carle

Find a Grave

Joseph Nathaniel Carle was born August 23, 1852, near Businessburg, Ohio. When he was three his father died, leaving his mother to raise the children as best she could. Many relatives lived in the area and helped take care of the children. Joseph stayed in Businessburg and grew up to be a blacksmith. He was a member of the Mariah Masonic Lodge #105 in Powhatan Point, Ohio from 1875 until 1898. He was the census enumerator for Mead Township, Belmont County, Ohio, for the now-lost 1890 census, and was active in politics, as was his father before him.

On October 30, 1879, Joe married Almaranda Jane Grisell in Monroe County, Ohio. She was the daughter of Simeon and Rebecca J. Wilson Grisell. After blacksmithing for some twenty years in the river valley that was Businessburg, a flood described as a "wall of water" came through and wiped out the smithy. The waters were so strong they swept away a pile of Civil War cannonballs laying outside the shop. There was nothing Joe could do to save his livelihood. He had to start anew.

Consequently, on April 5, 1899, the family arrived in Kansas, where so many of Joe's siblings had already gone. Shortly after they arrived, tragedy struck. While Joe was visiting his brother Will in Burlington and Alma and the children were visiting Joe's recently widowed brother-in-law, Dave Gillaspie, in LaHarpe, Joe contracted spinal meningitis. Word was sent to Alma and she arrived just before Joe died on May 1, 1899. He was taken to Waverly for burial with his sister, Araminta, who had just died a year earlier. ___________________________________ From the Burlington newspaper:

Joseph N. Carle, a brother of Mrs J.W. Stewart, died at Burlington Monday. The remains were brought to Waverly and the funeral held from the residence of Mrs. Stewart Wednesday, conducted by local ministers under the auspices of the Masonic lodge. The following obituary furnished by a friend:

"Joseph N. Carle as born in Belmont Co., Ohio, Aug. 23, 1852. Early in life he united with the Methodist Church. He and his wife later united with the Presbyterian church.

He removed to Kansas some four weeks ago and proposed settling in Burlington He fell sick last week of spinal meningitis and grew worse until Monday, when he succumbed. The deceased leaves a wife and four children and a host of friends. "He rests from his labors and his works do follow him."

The relatives have the sympathy of all. Mrs Stewart has lost two sisters in the past year which makes this affliction doubly hard to bear. (1899)
