About Joseph Colt, Sr.

Joseph Colt, s. of Benjamin Colt and Miriam Harris, b. Feb. 13, 1726/27 at Lyme, Conn. where he d. Oct. 15, 1787. Although Joseph has neither a recorded death in the printed Conn. vital records or known gravestone, the date of his death is contained in the lengthy personal "Narrative" of son Judah, a pioneer settler of Erie County, Penn. Judah's statement of the date of his father's death is partially confirmed by a single Conn. newspaper notice dated October 26, 1787, which gives only Joseph's name and Lyme as his death location. He is assumed to have been interred at the Selden cemetery at Hadlyme, Conn. where his wife and eldest son are interred with extant gravestones.

On Mar. 11, 1756 at Saybrook, Conn. (by Selden Ely, JP), Joseph m. Desire Pratt, dau. of Jabez and Deborah (Pratt) Pratt, b. at Lyme, Conn. on an unrecorded date after July 18, 1728 (g.s.) She d. July 18, 1806 at Lyme, Æ 78 (g.s.)

Joseph Colt and Desire Pratt had eight children recorded at Lyme, Conn.: Isaiah, d. unm.; Deborah (Colt) Selden; Judah Colt, Esq.; Desire (Colt) Selden; Asenath (Colt) Sill; Joseph; Samuel; and Jabez.
