About Joseph Randolph Coolidge, V

Joseph Randolph Coolidge, V

Find A Grave Memorial ID # 48788694

He was an attorney, civil engineer and the great-grandson of U.S. President Thomas Jefferson, and married Julia Gardner of Boston, Massachusetts.

Julia's mother, Catherine Elizabeth Gardner (Peabody), was the only daughter of Joseph Peabody and Elizabeth Smith of Salem, Massachusetts. Through her marriage, in 1826, to John Lowell Gardner, she united the large Peabody family fortune of Salem to one of Boston's first families.

Her husband was one of the last great East India opium merchants of Boston. He left a fortune of $5 million to his two surviving sons George Augustus and John Lowell Gardner, Jr. The Peabody-Gardner children further assured the social standing of their family through marital alliances with other Boston and New York first families.

George Augustus Gardner married Eliza Endicott Peabody and John Lowell Gardner, Jr. married Isabella Stewart from New York. The latter would become a leader of Boston Society and a famous patron of arts. Another son, Joseph Peabody Gardner (1829-1875) died before his parents; he had married Harriet Sears Amory and left three sons.

Through the marriage of his grandson, Joseph Randolph Coolidge, III to Anna Lyman Cabot in 1913, the Randolph-Coolidge-Peabody-Gardner fortunes would be united with the Boston Cabot family fortune.
