Rank: Lt. Col.

He was a soldier and a leader in the American Revolution. He began his military service as a private in 1774 under General Andrew Lewis, engaged in the battle of Point Pleasant. In 1775, he continued to serve as a lieutenant in William Russell's 7th Regiment in defense of Virginia along the western frontier. On 5 May 1776 he was appointed to captain, later rising to Lieutenant Colonel. He took part in battles at Monmouth, Burgoyne, Lexington, Brandywine, Princeton, and Trenton. He was at Valley Forge with General George Washington. In 1779, he raised a regiment for the state of Virginia and proceeded toward the Ohio River, where he assisted George Rogers Clark in Kentucky and Illinois.[3]

In 1782, in Charlottesville, Albemarle County, Virginia, Joseph married the widow Elizabeth Moore Woodson. Two years later, in 1784, they left Charlottesville with her son, Samuel Woodson, for Fayette County, to the west, in what was to become Kentucky.

They located in Jessamine County, but Col. Crockett’s figure was familiar and he was as well known in Woodford as in his home being just over the Woodford county line, near Keene. He was a civil engineer and Col. Thomas Marshall engaged his services in assisting him to straighten out the careless surveying that had been done in Fayette County, from which Woodford had not yet been separated.[4][5]

Together, they had seven children.

  1. Polly Divina Crockett (1782-1820)
  2. Robert Crockett (1786-1834)
  3. Joseph Crockett (1788-1823)
  4. Hugh Crockett (1789- )
  5. John Watkins Crockett (1790-1852)
  6. Martha Moore (Crockett) Bower (1792-1830)
  7. Elizabeth (Crockett) Price (1794-1833)

Joseph died 7 Nov 1829 at age 87 in Georgetown, Scott County, Kentucky, at the home of his son-in-law, and is buried with his wife at Woodson and Crockett Cemetery, Nicholasville, Jessamine County, Kentucky.[6] Of his burial, it is said:

There were present more than a thousand persons with carriages and horses. ... At the close of the ceremonies, the Rev. John Hudson delivered a brief address touching the high character of Col. Crockett as a citizen, a neighbor and friend—a model of virtue and morality, cherished in the affections of all who knew him.[7]
