Moved from Sewanee in about 1887 to Montague County Texas. Farmed there until about 1903, then moved to Claude, Texas with Son John. After the first norther, he told John "son my drawers are too thin for this Weather"! and traveled back toward Montague County, Stopping in Wilbarger County, where he bought 1300 acres with 20,000 silver dollars. He would chew tobacco in the morning while farming, put the plug on the rafter at lunch, and then pick a dry plug to smoke in his pipe in the afternoon. He was
