MEMORIAL PHOTOS 2 FLOWERS 4 Joseph Dant was the son of John Baptist Dant, 17xx-1808, and Susannah (Gough) Dant. He was the grandson of John Dant, and James and Priscilla) (Heard) Gough.
Joseph Dant married his step-sister, Elizabeth Belinder Shircliffe, daughter of Thomas, Sr. and Elizabeth (Hopewell) Shircliffe, in August 1792 in Nelson County, KY. Elizabeth Belinder's mother, the widow Elizabeth (Hopewell) Shircliffe, had married Joseph Dant's widowered father, John Baptist Dant, in July 1791 in Nelson (now Marion) County, VA (now KY). Joseph and Elizabeth Belinder's marriage bond was dated Aug. 9, 1792 and the surety was James Rhodes. The bride's stepfather, John B. Dant filed a written consent which was witnessed by James Rhodes. Father William DeRohan, for whom the noted landmark--Rohan's Knob--was named, was the minister at their marriage.
Joseph and Elizabeth Belinder were the parents of at least: Louisa (Dant) Smith, 18xx-18xx; Treacy Dant, 18xx-xxxx; Elizabeth (Dant) Smith, 1802-1858; Ann (Dant) Pike Clark, 179x-xxxx; Mary "Polly" (Dant) Hayden, 179x-18xx; and John Baptist Dant, 1799-1881.
In his will written Jan. 30, 1833 and recorded June 25, 1833, Joseph Dant names all his children, mentions his plantation, a mare, a slave named Nace, and leaves five dollars to Holy Cross and ten dollars for Masses for the repose of his soul. He makes his son, John Dant, his executor. This will was witnessed by: William Smock, Jefferson C. Peak, and William Peterson. This was the terrible year of the Asiatic Cholera Epedemic and I suspect it was the cause of his demise. His will can be found in the Washington County, KY Clerk's Office in Springfield, KY in Will Book "E", page 200.
