About Joseph Davis, Sr., of Reading
Not the same as Joseph Davis, “the Boston feltmaker” who married Elizabeth Saywell.
George Davis had eight children, the last six recorded at Reading, including:
ii. Joseph. d. at Reading 28 Jan. 1676; im. Hannah On 3 Apr.1677 administration on the estate of Joseph Davis was granted to his widow, Hannah Davis. Inventory amounting to about forty pounds included house, homelot and swamp lands (ibid. 3:166; b:259).
He had six children, born at Reading, one of these was the ubiquitous Joshua Davis who settled his grandmother Rist's estate.

notes
Joseph Davis is named in George Davis' will but not in the will of Sarah Rist , his former wife, implying he had a different mother.
However, He is in fact the son of Sarah (Clark) Davis/Rice. He is born after her first son Benjamn. He predeceased her, almost by 2 decades by the time her will was written. The fact he is absent from her will should not automatically mean he is not her son. His son, and her grandson, was Joshua born 23 Jan 1673 (he was the twin that survived) was the one that was the executor of her estate... Which helps confirm he is in fact her grandson and not a step-grandson.

Soon after George Davis's death, certainly before 1672, Sarah was married for a second time, to Nicholas Rist of Reading [Eaton, 109 110). The will of Sarah Rist of Redding, written 20 Sept. 1697, probated 15 May 1698, touching the worldly estate that my former husband George Davis and my son Benjamin Davis gave to me by their last wills for to dispose of, give and devise the same as follows: to grandson Joshua Davis all ye Homestead

July 9, 2001 Dear Tim,
I have continued research on the various New England ancestral lines you presented some weeks ago, and herein Include new findings since my last report. The Middlesex County Court Records Folio Collection, at the Massachusetts State Archives, has a petition(Follo 1679-86-4) from the selectmen of Reading on 12, 10mo. 1679, for power to dispose of Hanah Davise, a "wlddow woman" with minor children, "she not haveing whearewith to mainetaine her selfe but her hard labor much less to mainetaine her chlldren...she haveing bene by us warned to put her children out and free us of this truble but yet the matter is neglected..."
The Middlesex County court record book adds in 1679 that "The select men of Redding are ordered to dispose of the children of Widow Davis as the law directs. No further record Is found of the Davises in court records. It Is obvious that Hannah probably did not inherit property, land or otherwise, from her husband or her parents. She may well have remarried after 1679, but probably not In Reading as there is no record; the IGI entries for Hannah Davises marrying In Massachusetts during the next decade might be checked for possibilities.
