Joseph and Rebecca were married in Reading, Middlesex, Massachusetts, on August 19, 1685. They had two children and Rebecca died on September 17, 1693 in Reading. On December 7, 1693, Joseph married Mary Cutler in Charlestown, Middlesex. She was the daughter of John Cutler and Mary Brown, and the widow of Mathew Smith, having also just lost her spouse. The new family moved to Lyme, New London, then to East Haddam, Middlesex, both in Connecticut. Joseph and Mary had seven children. Joseph bought land in Wallingford which he gave his sons in 1718. The will of Joseph Dutton was dated September 1, 1733, and the inventory of his estate was taken on February 4, 1734. The will mentions his wife Mary, sons Samuel, Benjamin, David & Thomas; his son-in-law (actually step son) Matthew Smith; daughters Rebeckah Gates & Ruth Millard, and grandson William Selby. Joseph's son-in-laws Thomas Millard & Daniel Gates signed a receipt that they had received their part of the estate.
