About Joseph Harrington

74 years old; born about 1772. Son of Jeremiah Harrington Born in Rhode Island, Joseph grew up in Connecticut. When he turned 18, he set out for what was then known as the New Hampshire Grants to live with his brothers William and Benjamin. In 1790, the brothers lived on Pottier's Point in Shelburne Vermont. In 1799, Joseph began clearing land for his farm between Shelburne and Burlington. As one of the earliest settlers in the area, Joseph and his neighbors were responsible for early road building in the area. While working on the road to Burlington (now known as Shelburne Road), he said he felled a hemlock that was 9 feet in diameter. His obituary called him "Just and upright in all his dealings" and "an affectionate father and warmhearted grand sire."
