About Joseph A. Hollingsworth, II
Notes for Joseph Hollingsworth, Sr.:
For much of his life, Joseph, who married Rosannah Nichols of Laurens County, SC, in 1789, would remain loyal to the Society of Friends. But a day of decision was rapidly approaching. Of the 11 remaining families, one was the rapidly growing clan of Joseph Hollingsworth, who was now 38 years old, and his wife, the former Rosannah Nichols.
Joseph and Rosanna has come to a decision. Regardless of what their fellow Quakers decided to do, they would remain in SC. Too many sacrifices had been made, they agreed, too many battles fought, too much toil to make their little acreage produce, to just pack and head north.
The decision had not come easily, for to remain in SC would virtually mean severing a bond with the Society of friends as well as with their own parents. this bond had held the Hollingsworths together for more than two centuries. Among those departing fro OH were Joseph's father, Abraham Hollingsworth, and his mother, Margaret. A younger brother, Robert, however, opted to remain behind with Joseph. On the land purchased from his father in 1804, He and his family constructed a large house with an outside kitchen. They would remain there until the late 1820's, when they would follow some of their children on a permanent expedition into northern GA.
As nearly always was the case in those days, the transition from Quaker life was one laden with difficulties, for the community in which they lived was still virtually virgin land, yet to be fully cultivated and developed. the land Joseph purchased from his father, however, was full of potential and ripe for planting.
Still times were not easy. There were no stoves to speak of. No coal, no matches. Fires build in fire places were ignited from pine torches and yellow candles.
