copied from a Genforum post:
My primary source is a book compiled by Lyle K. Williams in 1992, titled "JOSEPH JACKSON (1705-1774) OF BEDFORD & GOOCHLAND COUNTIES, VIRGINIA & DESCENDANTS". Lyle Williams' address is 5000 Rock River Drive, Fort Worth, Texas 76103-1226.
Page 1 of this book states the author believes Joseph Jackson to be the oldest proven ancestor of his line; was born ca 1705, probably in England; one of eight brothers, who came to America as an indentured servant. (No known names of brothers)
Page 154 contains a transcript of a letter written 7/5/1882 by Jarvis Jackson to his nephew, which states ..."(his Great Grandfather Joseph) was bound to a worsted manufactory in England where they combed wool, tied it to a rack and drew it out...As he grew up he was an uncommon stout man and desired to change his trade to that of a house joiner on account of his strength, but he could not get away from his master and consequently he deserted his master and gave indenture upon himself to the captain of the ship for passage for 4 years and a man by the name of Hews of Virginia bought him."
"... He left 7 brothers in England but never knew any of them in America. Now my Great Grandmother, his wife, was the daughter of Captain Jarvis of England who was the Capt. of the King's Life Guard. She married the Captain of an English vessel, contrary to her father's wish, consequently she went with her husband to sea. The ship was lost in a storm and she and 6 or 7 others floated on the wreck for 6 or 7 days but were finally rescuedby a convoy from a French fleet and sold for salvage. The same man bought her that had bought my Great Grandfather and they married while they were servants and that constituted the start of the (our) Jackson family in America."
- Military service: Joseph was a Patriot in the Revolution - he provided provisions for the troops in Chesterfield. Co. His eldest son Joseph Jr was a Lt. in the War; he was captured by Indians in 1778 and held for sometime in an Indian village in Ohio. - Chesterfield, Virginia, United States
