Joseph left Liverpool for America on the ship Gauleondar, on 29th Sept., 1854. He met his wife to be Sarah Holyoak and her parents whilst crossing the plains to Utah They later married in Salt Lake City. The marriage was sealed in the Endowment House on 10th. June, 1856 by Daniel H. Wells according to the rites of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints (Morman). the couple went to Ogden to live, settling close by the Weber River on the corner of Wall and 27th Street Joseph changed his surname from Jury to his mother's maiden name of James,
Notes. it is noted on Joseph's baptismal record (St. James) Halse--the words single-base born, which I presume means that Joseph was born out of wedlock His surname on this record is James.. As more children were born of the union, it appears that his parents had a common law marriage. Joseph was later, as an adult, baptised into the Church of Jesus Christ of Latterday Saints by Elder William Jenkins in Cardiff, Wales. What happened between the early death of his mother and his conversion in Wales is yet to be discovered. LB
