According to "SPES ALIT AGRICOLAM" The Tilghman-Tillman Family-1225-1938 wriiten by Major Stephen F. Tillman page 179/180. Joseph Tillman , son of John and Susan (Fields) Tillman, was born1809 in Chatham County, NC.The records of the War Dept. show that he served in the Confederate Army as a member of Company F, 13th Tennessee Infantry. He married Frances Howard Childress, and settled in Harderman County, TN. While in the Confederate Army, Mr. Tillman held the rank of Lieutenant, and was held to be a most able and efficient officer. Issue:John C, born 1839, Gatsie Ann, born 1840, Jane, Margaret, Frank, Susan, Betty, Amanda, James Monroe, born November 22, 1846 and Dony.( could be David born April 1861) The census in 1870 shows two additional children of David and Nancy Tillman. He died on August 16, 1898 at Camp Thomas, Chickamuga, GA. Joe was serving in the volunteer infantry for the Spanish-American War. Buried at Chattanooga National Cemetery. Chattanooga, Tennessee. Buried as Joseph Tilghman (original spelling).
