Joseph Kilbourn was a son of Jonathan and Sarah (Bliss) Kilbourn.

He married (first) Elizabeth Marsh. He married (second) Sarah (Coe) Marsh who was the widow of Timothy Marsh (brother of his first wife). Many have made the mistake that the name of Joseph's second wife was Mary, but this is simply not accurate. Refer to probate records for Timothy Marsh which identify his widow as Sarah Marsh, and to the probate records for Thomas Coe (Sarah's father) which identify his daughter Sarah as the wife of Joseph Kilbourn. Therefore, actual records clearly show that Timothy Marsh and Joseph Kilbourn were both married to the same woman, named Sarah.

Payne Kenyon Kilbourn [The History and Antiquities of the name and family of Kilbourn..., 1856, p. 107] identifies that Joseph Kilbourn died in Sept 1807, although also includes an autobiographical statement of Joseph's son, Aaron Kilbourn in which he states "my father then removed to the vicinity of Detroit, bought a squatter's privilege upon Rouge River remained there two or three years, and then returned to Delaware, where he died in 1817, aged 72."
