Joseph Kitchell

Joseph and Nancy Kitchel moved to Washington county, Pennsylvania, about 30 miles south of Pittsburh, a few years after their marriage and lived there until the death of Nancy, about 1827. Joseph is said to have served in the war of 1812, and to have fought under General Andrew Jackson at New Orleans. He remarried but his children became scattered, some being bound out among relatives and friends. IN 1846 he went to Ohio where he was met by his son John Kitchel, of Lake County, Indiana, and accompanied him home and died at the home of his son in 1847. Joseph is said to have been a carpenter and an an augur which belonged to him is still in the possession of his grandson, Wesley Kitchel. In writing concerning her grandfather, Joseph Kitchel, Miss Rebecca Snyder, of Dawson, Pennsylvania, on March 25, 1912, said, "I have often heard my mother (Nancy Kitchel Snyder) say that she was two years old when her mother (Nancy Allen Kitchel) died and that her father (Joseph Kitchel) married again. His second wife died about 1833. When she died he took my mother, who had been living with friends, home to live with him. Joseph Kitchel and his second wife had one child, Martha, who was burned to death about the year 1838.
