About Abraham Kitchel, Esq.

Abraham Kitchel, (Joseph, Abraham, Samuel, Robert) and his 2nd wife, Rebecca Ward Farrand, lived out their lives in Rockaway, Morris County, New Jersey. Abraham's body was moved to Parsippany in 1792. He was prominent in church work, a leader in the community and a staunch patriot during the Revolution. Although not an enlisted soldier he served on the Committee of Safety. As the eldest son of Joseph Kitchel and Rachel Bates, Abraham had little incentive to migrate - he inherited the largest portion from his father and could not have done better elsewhere than what he was able to accumulate in Morris County.

Military Service: Enlisted, but resigned to serve as a Commissioner. Responsible for confiscated Tory property. The tories put a price on the heads of both Abraham and his younger brother Aaron.

Abraham moved to Rockaway, New Jersey and then later to Deville, New Jersey. He was a judge, was prominent in church work, and was a commissioner on the Committee of Safety during the Revolutionary War, and he was a state legislator.

Today, a dedication plaque by the Denville, New Jersey Historical Society stands in front of the Kitchel homestead which was occupied by Abraham Kitchel and his descendants from the 1770s to the 1920s. The plaque was memorializing the homestead was dedicated on 18 June 1983. The homestead is located on Kitchell Road which, in 1989, was a winding residential thoroughfare.
