About Joseph Knight

Joseph Knight, a son of Joseph Knight and Hannah Lamb.

From "A Genealogical Dictionary of The First Settlers of New England, Before 1692" by James Savage Volume #3

JOSEPH, Woburn, freem. 1676, perhaps s. of first Joseph, wh. rn. 4 Apr. 1699, Martha Lilly, in his will of 16 Jan. 1733 names w. Martha, and ds. Martha, Ruth, Rebecca, Hannah, Mary, and Dorothy.

In the Photo... this is a note from the constable of Chelmsford to the Constable of Woburn regarding Joseph Knight of Woburn shooting an Indian prisoner in Chelmsford. The incident occurred when a group of Indians, under custody of Captain Richardson and his soldiers, were being marched by Chelmsford Green where the local Militia was mustered. The local Militia was ordered to keep their muskets in the air. Joseph Knight leveled and discharged his musket killing a heavy set, easily recognizable Indian. Joseph Knight was placed under arrest and charged with murder. Joseph was held and placed on trial for murder. When questioned by the court, Joseph explained to the jury (his local peers) that his musket had accidentally discharged. The jury quickly found him not guilty. The judges were furious and ordered, several times, the jury to go back and reconsider their verdict. The jury kept coming back with not guilty findings. The court had no choice but to release Joseph as an innocent man.

A fortunate out-come for hundreds of us descendants. This all occurred during the era of the King Phillip's Indian war. The US civil war (by comparison) killed the largest amount of US citizens in history. However, the King Phillip war killed a far higher percentage of the population at the time.

This occurred in November of 1675. The story described Joseph Knight as being a young lad. Joseph (Jr.) would have been about 25. His father would have been about 51.
