John's surname seems to be derived from or having meaning of light. LEETE is an ancient name that can be traced back before the Norman conquest. According to the Doomesday Survey, a LEIT was a thane of Edward the Confessor, King of England from 1042 until Jan. 1065/6. John was taxed in the Subsidies of 1540 against Little Eversden and in 1542 at Great Eversden. Threfall, John, "50 Great Migration Colonists to New England & Their Origins," 1990, p. 255; ancestry chart p. 267.
