He married Mary Ann Scarborough in September, 1730 in Bucks County, Pennsylvania, the widow of Samuel Pickering.

Mary was the widow of Samuel Pickering and already had five children. Eventually two of Mary's children married two of Joseph's.

In 1740, Joseph was granted land just west of Winchester in the Shenandoah Valley of Virginia. The land centered around the area known as Round Hill. He spent the winter of 1740-41 camping on the land with his son, John. The family moved to there in 1741. It was then part of Orange County, Virginia.

The Lupton children in Frederick County split into two branches. The Quaker branch started with David Lupton, the son of Joseph and Rachael Lupton. The Quakers lived along Apple Pie Ridge Road.

John started the Presbyterian branch lived near Round Hill Presbyterian Church.

In 1782 only John and Jonathan appeared in the census of Frederick county.

Apple Pie Ridge Road is in Frederick County, Virginia. In 1751 Quaker families settled along Ridge Road. The road became known as Apple Pie Ridge Road when Hessian soldiers, captured during the revolution, would go to the ridge to eat the apple pies baked by the Quakers.

From Hopewell Friends History, 1734-1934, Frederick County, Virginia by Joint Committee of Hopewell Friends

A Joseph Lupton was one of the early treasurers of Hopewell Meeting. He was probably the one who, even in the midst of a bloody war, did not fear the Indians enough to pull in the sneck-string of his door at night. Concerning him Henry W. Scarborough, lawyer and business man of Philadelphia, under date of November 3, 1934, writes:

My ancestor Joseph Lupton, came from Yorkshire, England and settled near Newtown Bucks County, Pa., where he married Mercy Twining, daughter of Stephen Twining. Stephen Twining and his father had immigrated from Eastham, Barnstable County, on Cape Cod, Mass, about 1700 to Bucks County. Subsequently Joseph Lupton removed to Solebury Township, Bucks County, where he married the widow of Samuel Pickering, whose maiden name was Mary Scarborough.

About 1742 Joseph Lupton and his said wife removed to Frederick County, Va., and took along with them some of their own children and some of the children, Pickerings and Luptons by their first consorts. . . . I think Joseph Lupton was one of the early clerks [he was treasurer] of the Hopewell Monthly Meeting. I am descended from his eldest daughter, Elizabeth, who married Henry Paxon Jr. . . .

From the above showing Joseph Lupton in 1757 was evidently an "ancient" Friend.

Note: Their intentions to marry were first brought to Middletown Monthly Meeting,1713, and they were cleared to marry. They would marry Sept 10, 1713 at the home of Mercy's father. The clearness committee was not aware the couple had engaged in "unchaste relations" prior to their wedding. When their first child was born before nine months, the committee spoke to the couple. Joseph presented a paper condemning their actions to the MM. It was read, accepted and recorded in the MM minutes.
