Information found in the application for the Sons of the American Revolution by Richard Wathen:
Joseph McDonald and his wife Elizabeth (Ogle) McDonald made gun powder used by continental soldiers during the American Revolution . The gun powder was delivered by their younger children while the older children served in the Army. Joseph served with his older children in the same militia under Colonial William Preston in the Virginia Militia 1777-1781.
