About Joseph D. Miller

https://www.findagrave.com/memorial/22484936/joseph-d-miller Joseph D. was the oldest of the 7 children of Daniel and Maria (Mast) Miller and married Nancy Yoder about 1836 in Somerset County, Pennsylvania. They began their married life on a farm in Stony Creek Township, where their first 3 children were born. In 1843 they moved about 20 miles north to Conemaugh Township in Cambria County, where their last 4 children were born. This farm was near Johnstown, which was the third Amish Mennonite settlement in this area. In 1857 they moved to Eden Township in Lagrange County, Indiana and then in 1871 they followed their son Daniel's family on to Hickory County, Missouri. Daniel's family had moved the year before. Their trip took 27 days on covered wagons and when they got there life on the prairie was hard. 1874 was so bad it was called "the grasshopper year" and Joseph died that winter on February 12, 1875.
