Joseph Morehead son of John Morehead of Northumberland and Farquair counties, Virginia received a tract in Halifax Co., Virginia. He married Elizabeth Turner and they raised a large family in Halifax Co., Virginia. Sometime after 1766 they moved to North Carolina and settled in Richmond County. One report is in Steele's Township, on the River Road near Stanback's Ferry.

Many of the children married locally and one went to Georgia, Elizabeth who married a Redman. Nancy married David Turner (Daniel Thomas?), Sarah a Cathrell (spelling?), Joseph Miss Jennings, Mary the widower Thomas Stanback and John married Obedience Motley. His descendants moved from Virginia to North Carolina.

Land grants have been found in the Secretary of State's office, Raleigh, N.C., as follows:

Joseph Morehead for 100 acres of land on Naked Creek, Richmond County - Entered December 2, 1799, Entry No. 34. Another grant for 25 acres in Richmond Co., Book 115, p. 371. Another for 100 acres. Entry 347 book 115 p. 368. Entered September 17, 1802. And another for 68 acres "front of his Hill tract." June 7, 1799, book 104, p. 282. (Some of these may be Joseph Morehead, Jr., land grants).

No deeds of transfer are found in the county records. However, Joseph Morehead's will gives to Charles land on Naked Creek and to Mary and Nancy the east end of the Hill land, until they marry, and then to Charles and his heirs.

The will of Joseph Morehead is found in Richmond County Will Book No. 1 page 107 and is dated July 11, 1806.
