About Joseph Mott, Union Place
some confusion here:
There were other Motts of Bowery Lane as well. See Wilson's Inhabitants of New York 1774-1776 p.225 where we read of John Mott and John Mott, Jr. of Bowery Lane
- butcher and tavern owner...
"The Mott family that gave its name to the street has been in New York since Adam de la Motte arrived from England in 1635. The particular Mott whom the street is named for may have been Joseph Mott, a butcher who owned a tavern at what is now 143rd Street and 8th Avenue that served as a headquarters for General Washington during the Revolutionary War.
Research for Joseph Mott, a neighbor to the south: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mott_Street#Early_configuration "Having been previously known as Old Street, as well as Winne Street (also spelled Wynne) for the section between Pell and Bleecker, Mott Street was renamed in the late 18th century to honor the prominent local family of the same name, likely in particular businessman Joseph Mott, a butcher and tavern owner who provided support to the rebel forces in the American Revolution."
~• If I recall correctly, both Joseph and Henry Spingler were butchers associated in the open air markets of Lower Manhattan (see DeVoe) {MMvB} If Joseph Mott had a butcher business in Lower Manhattan and a tavern at 143rd St., a Union Place residence would be half-way in-between.. (more research needed.
Placing the Mott property in the painting": behind the yellow Spingler house on the west side of Broadway. > hypothetically, of course... MMvB Jan. 2022
Joseph's paternal grandmother was a Burling. Burlings had land along the Bowery by union Place, as did the Spinglers.
Quirk
The Mott family and Spingler/van B(e)uren family would intermarry in a later generation, albeit among distant cousins: see Louisa Dunmore van Buren .
