Metz Memorbuch #528 (folio 65a): "The pious and humble Rabbi Juda Joseph Yossel, son of the martyred Ephraim, who devoted himself all his life to the Law morning and evening, did good to the poor, recited after midnight hymns and canticles as well as the entire book of Psalms. He was the head of the holy community and led it in righteousness for more than forty years, without favoritism. He mortified himself with many mortifications, and fasted for a long time consecutively. He gave many sermons which were accepted by the listeners. He decided in religious matters, and was an expert in the study of the Talmud. He was the advisor and guide of the brotherhood of purifiers, and regularly lectured to them. He was eager to pray and traded faithfully. His sons and daughters donated to the hospice for him." Died at an advanced age on Sunday evening and was buried on Monday, the eve of the New Moon of Tevet 5456 [5 Dec 1695].
