RIPON PRIEST DEAD AT 86; RITES SLATED - The Rev. Joseph F. Platta, 86, of 411 E. Fond du Lac St. Ripon died at 12:45 a.m. Sunday at St. Agnes Hospital, after an illness of many months.
Born in Milwaukee Oct. 28, 1881, he was the son of Ignaz and Anna Kraft Platta. He attended schools in Milwaukee and for two seasons pitched for the New York Giants under the name of Joe Burke. He enrolled in St. Francis Seminary, Milwaukee, transferred to St. Bonaventure, and completed his studies at the University of Minnesota.
In January of this year he celebrated 60 years in the Catholic priesthood. He had been an assistant at St. Stanislaus, Milwaukee; St. Michael’s Beaver Dam and St. Albert’s Milwaukee. For the last 52 years, he had been pastor of St. Wenceslaus Church, Ripon.
Father Platta is survived by one brother, Stanley, Route 1, Ripon; one nephew, Walter, Route 1, Ripon; and three nieces, Mary Banes, Chicago, Dorothy Scale, Riverside, Calif. and Joan Tangas, Detroit; Mrs. Frances Platta, Milwaukee, is a sister-in-law. He was preceded in death by his parents, three brothers and two sisters.
A Pontifical Requiem Mass will be said at 11 a.m. Thursday with recitation of the Office of the Dead at 10:30 a.m. at St. Wenceslaus Church. Burial will be in St. Patrick’s Cemetery, Ripon.
