Family notes

Joseph came from Yorkshire England with Father and family when he was about 16 in the ship "Mary and John" in 1635 and settled in Salem MA where he married and raised his family. He was a husbandman, freeman and Quaker. Will 10 sept 1666 proved 1667 with wife as executrix.

Notes

Although they escaped arrest, Joseph (1607–1667) and Gertrude (Shattuck) Pope also attended the meeting at Nicholas Phelps’s house and, like Buffum, they received fines throughout the 1660s. At least five of their children married into Quaker families.

All those mentioned in his will, dated 11 Sep 1666. He requested his brothers George, Richard and Joseph Gardner and his cousin, Samuel Shattok the

elder to be overseers of the will. Lieutenant George Gardner deposed 27 Apr

In 1658, was punished for going to Quaker meeting. Joseph Pope, son of Robert Pope, of Yorkshire England, pioneer ancestor of his line in the New World, sailed from London, Mar 26, 1634 in the "Mary and John". Settled in part of Salem known as West Danvers, MA. After study of

tenants of the Quakers, Joseph and his wife Gertrude accepted faith of the sect 1658. Excommunicated from Church of Salem 1662. d. ab 1667, will dated 10 Sep 1666, probated 27 Jun 1667, mentions wife Gertrude as Exec. m. 1st Damaris______; 2nd Gertrude _______, living in 1699, Salem. Issue: 3 dau, 5 sons.

He emigrated from England in 1634 on the ship "Mary & John" of London.

Joseph was in Salem as early as 1636. He took his oath to become a freeman on 5/17/1637. He appeared on the list of Salem Land Grants of 1636 where he was allotted 20 acres.

On 1/29/1637-8, The town granted him 20 acres that previously belonged to a Mr. Thorndyke.

"Joseph Pope, the progenitor of the various families of the name now residing in this vicinity, is said to be the son of Robert Pope, of Yorkshire, England. He came to this country in the 'Mary and John,' of London, in 1634, was recorded a Church Member before 1636, made a Freeman in 1637, had lands granted in 1637 and at other time in that portion of Salem now known as West Danvers, and some of it bordering on the Ipswich river. He and his wife Gertrude were before the court in 1658 for attending Quaker Meetings, and in 1662 were excommunicated for their adherence to the opinions of that sect." from http://www.quakers-n-othersr.us
