About Joseph Willard Roosevelt
ROOSEVELT--J. Willard, of Orient died May 18, 2008 at home. He was 90. He grew up in NY, NY, went to Groton and Harvard; studied piano with Nadia Boulanger in Paris and Gargenville, France. He was a musician and composer, taught music for many years at the Hartt School of the University of Hartford, CT, Mannes College The New School for Music in NY, NY, Fairleigh Dickinson University in New Jersey and The Longy School of Music in Cambridge, MA, and was a member of the Long Island Composer's Alliance. He served in the Pacific during WWII as Commander of the USS Greene, APD. Son of Kermit and Belle Willard Roosevelt, his grandfather was President Theodore Roosevelt. Greatly loved by all, he is survived by his wife Carol of Orient, son Dirck of Cambridge, MA, daughter Elizabeth Aldred of Brewster, MA, three grandsons, a greatgranddaughter and many nieces and nephews. Family and friends are invited to attend a memorial service at the Theodore Roosevelt Birthplace, 28 E 20 St., NY, NY on September 27, 2008 at 3 PM. Contributions may be made in his memory to the Music Program of the Harlem School of the Arts, NY.

Joseph Willard Roosevelt (January 16, 1918, Madrid, Spain – May 18, 2008, Orient, New York) was an American pianist and composer.
Son of Belle Wyatt Willard and Kermit Roosevelt I, he was a grandson of U.S. President Theodore Roosevelt. He served in the Pacific during World War II as Commander of the USS Greene, APD. He was first married to Nancy Thayer, daughter of E. E. Cummings. Roosevelt attended Groton School and Harvard University and studied piano with Nadia Boulanger in France. He taught music at The Hartt School, Mannes College of Music, Fairleigh Dickinson University and the Longy School of Music.
Roosevelt's compositions are published by the American Composers Alliance and Merion Music.
Roosevelt died at the age of 90 on May 18, 2008.
