the early settler at Callicoon.

Joseph Skinner came from Litchfield Conn., at the same time and located on the Flats across from Big Island and later named them St. Tammany. The only one whom we can find who located on the Greswald tract was Joseph Ross who located on the east side of the Delaware at the mouth of the Callicoon Creek the first white man to settle in Callicoon. From this man descended all the Ross's who have populated this section. The chronological tree of this family is so wide-spreading that we find it irksome to trace but may be able to refer to this deserving family later on.

The Tyler family has another wide tree of descendants and the forbears had much to do in making the history of this section and is closely allied to the Ross family by marital ties. Bazaleel Tyler who came to the Cochecton valley by the earnest solicitation of Joseph Greswald was born in Litchfield Conn., Nov.6, 1717, married Sarah Calkin and moved to Cochecton valley in 1754 .

Joseph Ross, the pioneer, his wife and some members of his family including his son-in-law, Nathaniel Tyler and wife are buried in the Ross private burying plot at the head of the binnacle above Callicoon. ~~~~~~~~~~~~ 1790 census lists: joseph ross 3 0 2...3 males 16 and up (joseph)...0 males<16...2 females any age; joseph actual age c. 60...elizabeth c. 60...2 sons 16 and up...one daughter any age... source bob boyd in his study "nathan mitchell, patriot, loyalist, or both?" identifies nathan mitchell (b. 1739) as the son-in-law of joseph ross, a tory and indian agent of the colonial government...e.g. joseph ross is the father of elizabeth, the wife of nathan mitchell...
