Source: from EARLY HISTORICAL EVENTS IN THE DELAWARE VALLEY, by John T. Bradley ; ( A series of historical articles of interest to everyone who resides in the Delaware section of the county ). : In a preceding chapter we spoke briefly of the Ross family who in later years were residents and some of them natives of Damascus township. This carries us back to scenes and tragedies enacted in the Cushetunk region for the Ross family of whom we now write lived on the original Moses Thomas farm upon which his historic Block House fort was built, The forbearers come from Revolutionary stock on both the paternal and maternal sides. They settled in the valley when the Indians were still numerous enough to be a menace to their lives. Both the Rosses and Thomases were noted in their day as guides and scouts. John Ross great grandfather of the family we are coming to was among the first to settle in Wayne county. John and Sophia Ross were the parents of eleven children. John, who was a soldier in the war of 1812, Elias, Amos, George, Bazaleel C. Polly, Betsy, Jane, Sarah, Lydia and Julia. Bazaleel C. Ross was born at Callicoon, N.Y., in March 1805 and was married in Damascus township to Miss Clarissa Thomas who was born in July 1808 the daughter of Moses Thomas (3) and granddaughter of Moses Thomas (2) a myrter of the Minisink Battle. After his marriage he bought the Thomas farm between Damascus and Milanville and passed the remainder of his life upon it. He died in 1854 and his wife in 1887. She died upon the farm upon which she was born. To them were born the following family: Moses, Chester H. who married Sallie Dexter and after residing in Damascus township for a time migrated to Susquehanna county where he died in 1885, survived by four sons. Joseph Ross the pioneer, his wife and some members of his family including his son in law Nathaniel Tyler and wife are buried in the Ross private burying plot at the head of the binnacle above Callicoon.
