About Joseph Scott, Sr.
From Paris Daily Beacon March 16, 1899 THE CURTAIN FALLS Josephus Scott Passes Away at His Home in Chrisman HIS DEMISE WAS NOT EXPECTED The End is Consequent to a Long and Painful Illness--One of Edgar Co's Best Known Farmers and Stock Dealers The death of Josephus Scott occurred at his home in Chrisman at an early hour this morning, being consequent to the long and painful illness with a complication of troubles. He was a great sufferer, but manifested the utmost fortitude and met the inevitable with patient resignation.
Mr. Scott was one of Edgar county's wealthiest farmers and stock dealers, his land holdings being between 2,00 and 3,000 acres, which he had accumulated by a life of hard work backed up by native shrewdness and habits of temperance and frugality.
He was born at Martinsville, Ind. Oct 25th, 1829, being in the seventieth year of his age. His parents were Samuel and Rebecca Scott, who, in his childhood, removed to Prairie township where most of his life was spent. For the past fourteen years he has resided in Chrisman, from which point he could most advanteously oversee his farming interests in Ross, Prairie and Edgar townships. Mr. Scott not only tilled the soil but dealt extensively in stock, being one of Edgar county's largest and most successful feeders.
He was married May 30th 1853, to Evaline Wood of near Dana, the vows being solemnized by Esq. David Light, of that locality. Seven children were born to them, of whom but three, William H., Samuel and Addie survive. Those who have passed away are Ella, Etta, Mrs. Mattie Seybold and Jospehus Jr., the latter being killed on the railroad a few years ago.
Mr. Scott had no church or secret society connection. He was a man of very quiet disposition and gave his entire time to the management of his business affairs which he conducted with judgement and skill. He lived up to the obligations of good citizenship and was held in general respect in the community where he resided.
Funeral services will be conducted from the M.E. church of Chrisman on Saturday at 10:30 a.m., Rev. A. G. Bluck officiating. Interment will be made at Woodland cemetery near that village.* Reference: Find A Grave Memorial - SmartCopy: Mar 18 2020, 15:55:50 UTC
