In the American Revolution Joseph Scovil, Esq. was a Private in Capt. Ensign's Company of Col. Moseley's Regiment. Joseph arrived July 7, 1778 at his unit's encampment on the Hudson River.
Joseph Scovil, Esq., of the state of Connecticut, was a "private during the Revolutionary War." As a result, he was entitled to receive $49.54 per annum during his natural life, commencing March 4, 1831, and payable semi-annually on the 4th of March and 4th of September, in every year. As per a July 12, 1833 certification of the then acting Secretary of War. The certification was examined and countersigned by the Commissioner of Pensions. The heading of the document is War Department-Revolutionary Claim.
"Joseph Scovil joined the First Congregational Church at Haddam [Connecticut] with his wife Sarah in September, 1787, and remained in its communion until his death." Homer Worthngton Brainard (1915).
Joseph Scovil, Esq. is buried in the Old Higganum Cemetery, Haddam, Connecticut.
