Biography

Joseph Shaw was the son of John Shaw and Hannah Whitmarsh. His birth is not found in the Weymouth records, but he is mentioned first in his father's will and there is a gap in the births of the children between the first child, John born in 1679 (who died young) and the second recorded child, Abraham, born in 1685, Joseph was probably born between 1679 and 1685.[1]

Joseph Shaw confusion explanation

Joseph Shaw (b 11 Jan 1691 Weymouth d. abt 1761 Bridgewater) is very often confused with Joseph Shaw b 1682 poss Weymouth. (Including myself for years.) Joseph Shaw (b. 1691) was the son of Joseph Shaw (1664-1718) and Judith Whitmarsh (1669-1760). Joseph Shaw (b. 1682) was the son of (Deacon) John Shaw (1653-1717/8) and Hannah Whitmarsh (1661-1735) (Note: John Shaw (1653-1717/8) was the brother of Joseph Shaw (1664-1718) and they married sisters Judith and Hannah Whitmarsh.) Joseph Shaw, b 15 Apr 1664, was the son of John Shaw & Alice Phillips, above, m. Judith Whitmarsh b 2 Sep 1669. Joseph & Judith (Whitmarsh) Shaw's son, Joseph Shaw, b 11 Jan 1691 Weymouth never married. Joseph & Judith (Whitmarsh) Shaw later moved to Bridgewater. Joseph Shaw (b. 1682) possibly married sisters (1) Sarah (?Blanchard?) & (2) Mary Blanchard [Blancher in Weymouth vital records for both], contrary to most genealogies. The evidence for this is as follows:

1. The Joseph Shaw who died in 1744 is listed in Weymouth VR as the son of John and Hannah (Shaw). 2. The first three children (including Joseph b. 1691) of Joseph Shaw (1664-1718) and Judith Whitmarsh (1669-1760) were born in Weymouth, the rest of their children were born in Bridgewater. Thus the family moved to Bridgewater between1695 and 1698. Weymouth VR and Bridgewater VR 3. In the probate cases of John Shaw (1653-1717/8) Joseph Shaw (b. 1691) is listed as being of Bridgewater. The Suffolk County probate lists Joseph and nine of his ten siblings, matching the names of the children of Joseph Shaw (1664-1718) and Judith Whitmarsh (1669-1760). Plymouth Co Probate case 17869 and Suffolk Co Probate case 4162 4. The will of Joseph Shaw (b. 1691) makes no mention of wife or children and names his siblings. Plymouth Co Probate case 17970 5. Nahum Mitchell states on p. 304 of his book History of the Early Settlement of Bridgewater that Joseph & Judith (Whitmarsh) Shaw's children, Joseph Shaw and Judith Shaw never married. 6. There is no evidence that a Joseph Shaw died on 25 Mar 1742, a date given in many genealogies and Early Pleasant River Families. That is the date for the will of Joseph Shaw.
