  • Joseph Sturge was born 21 Aug 1818 ,Olveston, Sth Gloucestershire, England to parents Thomas Marshall Sturge and Hannah Enoch.
  • The family were Quakers or "The Society of Friends" a religious group
  • Joseph was the .2nd..of 7 children. His siblings were Edwin, Thomas, Alfred, Frederick, Emma & John
  • He was educated and moved from his fathers house at Gloucester in 1844 aged 25.
  • 3 years later, he was in trouble with "The Society of Friends" (Quakers) for marrying outside the religion. He had married Sarah Elizabeth Nesbit in District of Clifton Union in the Counties of Clouster & Bristol, 23 October,1847.... He was aged 29, she was26.
  • When they married, they were disowned from the society.
  • At a Quakers meeting in 1847, the prepared a Testimony of Disunion and it was adopted at later meeting 8/3/1848.
  • Quote"..... The Friends appointed have brought in a Testimony of Disunion with Joseph Sturge which has been adopted by the meeting. It is as follows:

Joseph Sturge having been married in a manner inconsistent with the Principles of Friends to a person not in membership with us, and having been visited thereon previous to his marriage, this meeting apprehends that it cannot do otherwise than disown the said Joseph Sturge as a member of our Society, which is accordingly hereby done."

  • His father Thomas Marshall always remained a Quaker but another of Josephs Brothers (??probably Alfred) had done the same thing 4 years earlier.
  • 1851 census...Joseph Head of household listed as an Ironmonger aged 32 employing 2 apprentices.

In the household were wife Sarah, 2 choldren Fanny & Eliz....plus Sarahs parents John & Amelia Nesbit, Sarahs married sister Amelia Tiley(38) + 1 14 year old apprentice and 1 servant.

  • They had 5 children between...1848-1856... . born in England... 1st born Fanny 1848-, followed by ..., , Alice, 1850 Elizabeth1851,John1854 & Alfred.1856......
  • 1860 Sarah and Joseph left for NZ aboard the ship Avalanche. Of their five children at the time they brought the oldest and the youngest with them Fanny and Alf. They had decided to leave for NZ and knew nothing about it, except that land was selling cheap. * Bessie, Alice and John stayed in England with their grandfather to get and education
  • On the voyage over, Arthur was born on board the Avalanche on ....April 14. (thus he was named Arthur James Avalanche Sturge.
  • The ship arrived in Auckland on May 7 1860 4 weeks after Arthur was bornafter a voyage of 95 days from London
  • Joseph & Sarah arrived in Auckland, and stayed briefly before moving North.
  • Joseph soon acquired a block of land at Peria to the south west of Oruaiti .At WasteLands Office, Mangonui, 4/1/1861, he bought part of Lot 5, Totara Block totalling 140 Acres.
  • HE built a homestead there and named it after his birth place - Olveston Manor. .
  • Times were tough and hard for the settlers
  • 1862, Ethel was born Mangonui,Northland
  • 1866, Anne (Annie) was born in Omaitai,Oruru,Mangonui,
  • around 1868 , Bessie, Alice and John came to NZ on the ship the Empress.
  • Joseph died November 7, 1874 aged (56) at his home of Olveston Manor, in Okaihau, from a Disease of the Prostate (son John Josephs property)
  • He is buried in a single Grave. on .Dangens Rd...farm, Okauihau, New Zealand
  • All 8 of their children married.
  • Sarah died..27 years later in 1901 She is buried at St Catherines Church, , Okaihau

INSTRUCTIONS TO REACH THE GRAVE OF JOSEPH STURGE VII

He was buried in a single gravesite on the farm. There is an original kauri tombstone + a new headstone.

TO REACH JOSEPHS HOUSE SITE.....take DANGENS RD.(normally a very steep hill)

                                                         near top of hill...take 1st LEFT.

1ST House on LEFT is near the house site.
There is a flat area to LEFT of house with an old
OAK tree and old bulbs growing.
Josephs house was on the SMALL FLAT.
==TO REACH THE GRAVE SITE..........==

Get back onto DANGENS RD for a further few meters.

A Transformer/power pole is positioned on the side of road.

DO NOT TAKE the side road.

FEW METRES away on L) of Dangens Rd is a TRACK before a medium sized RIMU tree.

The GRAVE is near the FENCE LINE with a large Ti tree lying right next to it.

Has original kauri tombstone also with a small new headstone.
