Joseph Howard Toms

J Howard Toms, 85, of 101 Hillcrest Ave., Waynesboro, died Wednesday night, Oct 12, 1994, in Waynesboro Hospital.

Born Oct 4, 1909, in Washington Township, he was a son of the late Ray and Etta (Oberholtzer) Toms. Mr Toms was a lifelong resident of the Waynesboro area.

He and his wife, Mary E (Gantz) Toms, had been married for 62 years.

He worked in maintenance at Landis Tool Co., Waynesboro, for 38 years, retiring in 1973. Before working at the tool company, he was employed at the former Velvet Ice Cream Co. of Waynesboro.

Mr Toms was a member of BPO Elks Lodge 731, Egles Club Inc., Owls Club No. 1073, Waynesboro Fish and Game Association and AARP Chapter 2977.

In addition to his wife, Mr Toms is survived by two sons, Joseph F Toms and Jack R Toms, both of Waynesboro; five grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; one brother, Richard Toms of Florida; and eight sisters, Hazel Daugherty of Greencastle; Isabelle Henicle and Marie Wishard, both of Waynesboro; Gladys Toms of Marion; Janet Decker of Quincy; Mary Hissong of St Thomas; Martha Barnhart of Chambersburg; and Cathryn Furney of Fayetteville.

He was preceded in death by four brothers and one sister.

Services were held at 2 this afternoon in Snyder-Lochstampfor Funeral Home Inc., Waynesboro, with the Rev. Brent Driver officiating. Burial was in Green Hill Cemetery, Waynesboro.

The family received friends one hour prior to services today at the funeral home.
