Convicted at a Special Session of Gaol Delivery in Surrey, 27 Dec. 1824, of stealing a tea caddy & sentenced to transportation for 7 yrs.
Departed Sheerness/Downs aboard the Medina on 28 Apr. 1825, arriving in Hobart town on 14 Sept. 1825 with 177 other convicts.
Gaol reported his character to be 'bad', and that he had been incarcerated previously.
Was assigned to charcoal production in Kangaroo point, but persistently absconded resulting in time on the treadmill; 25 lashes for riotous behaviour
Married Sarah Atkins in 1834. Interestingly, Sarah is noted as being a spinster on the marriage record.
Information after this date is poor, however the 1842 & 1843 Census noted a Joseph Turner living on the Huon River as a 'splitter' (tree feller?). Turner has a female companion, and both are aged within the birthdates of Joseph & Sarah. Further, the census shows Joseph Turner as being a free man, but not arriving free, which is consistent with that of a pardoned convict. The unnamed female is shown to have arrived in the Colony as a free person
