About Joseph Webb

Biography

Joseph married a woman (Mary) out of the Quaker faith, by a justice, and against parents' wishes about (slightly before) 29 Jun 1758. A complaint about this was presented at the Monthly Meetng, and the usual procedure of trying to persuade him as to the error of his ways was followed. In the end, the Exeter Meeting disowned him[1] There is a note by his name that reads, "Brunswick Twp., Berks Co., Pa".[2] There is record of the administration of the estate of one Joseph Webb, Brunswick, Berks Co, to Rachel and Martha Webb,, daughters, Mary the widow renouncing, 21 Mar 1781.[3] This text references Abstracts of Berks County Wills, Vol. 1, p 276.

Joseph's probate records[4] show that he died intestate, leaving his wife Mary and seven children, three of whom were under the age of 14. The real and personal estate was described as "considerable", and there are various documents added through the years regarding choice of guardian. The children are:

  1. Rachel
  2. Mary
  3. Martha
  4. Sarah,
  5. Joseph
  6. Dinah
  7. Obadiah

The last two were still under 14 at the date of the last document, 20 Dec 1792. We also learned that at that writing, Rachel was the wife of James Dickinson, and Mary was the wife of John Abite.

By the description of Joseph's wife, Mary, as she is renouncing her right to serve as administratrix, Rachel, and then Martha were her eldest daughters. Joseph, Jr. described himself as the oldest son.

Again, according to the same papers referenced above, Joseph and his family lived in Brunswig/Bownswig/ BRUNSWICK, Berks County (later, after redefininig counties, in Schuylkill County). The probate occurred in Reading, in and for the County of Berks, Pennsylvania.
